Reba McEntire – “Fancy”

Few songs are as closely associated with a recording artist as “Fancy” is with Reba McEntire. Although many fans assume the song was written specifically for McEntire, “Fancy” actually began its life years earlier as a dramatic story-song penned and recorded by singer-songwriter Bobbie Gentry in 1969. More than two decades later, Reba transformed it into one of the defining performances of her career.

Bobbie Gentry originally released “Fancy” as the follow-up to her smash hit “Ode to Billie Joe.” The song told the story of a young girl growing up in extreme poverty whose mother encourages her to use her beauty and charm to escape a difficult life. Unlike many country songs of the era, “Fancy” presented its heroine not as a victim but as a survivor who overcomes impossible odds. While Gentry’s version was successful, it never reached the iconic status it would later achieve.

In 1990, Reba McEntire included “Fancy” on her album Rumor Has It. At the time, she was already one of country music’s biggest stars, but she was looking for songs that would showcase her ability to tell a story. “Fancy” provided the perfect opportunity. McEntire later said she had loved the song for years and always wanted to record it.

Produced by Tony Brown and Reba herself, the recording featured a more contemporary country arrangement than Gentry’s original version. Reba’s powerful vocal performance brought new emotion and drama to the song, particularly as the character reflects on her difficult childhood and eventual rise from poverty. The song’s unforgettable opening line—“I remember it all very well lookin’ back”—immediately pulls listeners into the story.

Although “Fancy” only reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, its impact far exceeded its chart position. The elaborate music video, inspired by the song’s rags-to-riches storyline, became one of the most memorable country videos of the early 1990s. The video earned heavy rotation on CMT and helped introduce the song to an even wider audience.

Over the years, “Fancy” has become Reba McEntire’s signature song and a concert favorite. She frequently closes shows with the performance, often receiving one of the loudest audience reactions of the night. The song’s themes of resilience, determination, and survival continue to resonate with listeners decades after its release.

Today, “Fancy” stands as one of country music’s greatest story songs. While Bobbie Gentry created the character, Reba McEntire made her a legend, turning a forgotten gem into one of the most celebrated recordings of her Hall of Fame career.
