Music Vince Gill – “One More Last Chance

Vince Gill combined traditional country instrumentation, clever wordplay and a legendary George Jones story to create “One More Last Chance,” one of the most entertaining hits of his career.

Gill co-wrote the song with respected Nashville songwriter Gary Nicholson. Instead of delivering another serious song about a troubled relationship, the two writers approached the subject with humor. The narrator arrives home with whiskey on his breath and finds his angry wife waiting for him with a Bible in one hand and a rolling pin in the other. She warns that his nights of drinking with his friends are about to cost him the marriage.

He begs for “one more last chance,” promising that he is not being unfaithful—he is simply making noise with the other “good ol’ boys.” When his wife takes his glasses and car keys to keep him home, he discovers that she has forgotten about his John Deere. Naturally, he uses the tractor to make his escape.

That final joke was connected to one of country music’s most famous stories. George Jones reportedly once rode a lawn mower to buy alcohol after his wife took away the keys to his cars. Whether every detail of the tale happened exactly as it has been repeated is almost beside the point. The lawn-mower adventure became part of Jones’ country music legend, and Gill and Nicholson turned it into an unforgettable punchline.

Produced by Tony Brown, “One More Last Chance” appeared on Gill’s enormously successful 1992 album I Still Believe in You. The upbeat arrangement showcased Gill’s guitar work and featured Delbert McClinton on harmonica. Its lively traditional-country sound provided a playful contrast to the album’s emotional ballads.

MCA released the song as the album’s fourth single in July 1993. It entered Billboard’s country chart at No. 61 and eventually reached No. 1 on October 9, remaining there for one week. It spent 20 weeks on the chart and became the third No. 1 single from the album.

The music video, directed by John Lloyd Miller, added another layer to the joke. Gill and several friends are shown playing golf after arriving at the course in unusual vehicles. At the end, George Jones himself appears riding a John Deere lawn mower, confirming that he was more than willing to laugh along with the legend.

“One More Last Chance” remains a favorite because it captures Vince Gill’s lighter side. Beneath his smooth voice and remarkable musicianship was a sharp sense of humor—and this song gave him the perfect opportunity to show it.
